PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Delta State University Women's Basketball Team (12-13, 8-11 GSC) fell on the road to the Argonauts from the University of West Florida (16-8, 12-6 GSC) 69-56 Saturday afternoon in the UWF Field House in Pensacola.
Junior guard
Olivia Allen posted her second 20-point performance for Delta State on the afternoon.
The Lady Statesmen back court got things going early on with back-to-back threes from Allen and
Madi Kate Vuncannon to push ahead 6-0 early on.
Allen and
Wakiryah Daniels would attack the rim for the remaining of the quarter pushing Delta State to a 17-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. Daniels was the other Lady Statesmen scoring double digits as she added on 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.
In the second quarter, Daniels and Allen continued to work on the offensive end, scoring a combined 10 points for the green and white as DSU trailed UWF 31-27 at the half.
Despite falling behind by eight points with six minutes remaining in the third quarter, Delta State battled back finishing the quarter with a 11-2 run as the back court trio of Allen, Vuncannon and
MaKenzie Hill put DSU back on top 46-45 going into the final frame.
A late run by the Argonauts in the fourth quarter would push UWF to a 69-56 win.
The Lady Statesmen will be back home for the final two home games in the regular season as they will host the Lady Flames from Lee on Thursday night on Lloyd Clark Court in Walter Sillers Coliseum. The tip off on Thursday is set for 5:30 p.m. (CDT).
