Lady Statesmen Use Long Ball to Sweep Union in Doubleheader

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen (8-2, 4-0 GSC) swept the Lady Bulldogs of Union University (1-10, 1-3 GSC) in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at University Field.
 
Delta State opened scoring in the home half of the third inning when Abb Cataldo scored Bailey Way on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to take the early 1-0 over the Lady Bulldogs.
 
Union answered in its next at-bat, scoring two runs to claim the 2-1 lead.
 
The Green-and-White answered right back in their next at-bat when Mattie Granberry launched her first home run of the season, a grand slam, to reclaim the lead 5-2.
 
The Lady Bulldogs threatened in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs on two hits and a DSU error, but Delta State maintained the lead, winning game one 5-4.
 
Emma Collier and Way led the team offensively in game one with two hits each. Emma Enderud and Averi Bridgman combined for six innings, giving up four runs on five hits and striking out six.
 
Delta State carried its offense through to game two, scoring two runs in the its first at-bat when Collier singled through the left side, scoring Granberry and Way.
 
The Lady Statesmen added an insurance run in the home half of the fourth to go up 3-0 when Ally Agner reached on a fielding error, scoring pinch runner Lina Ornelas.
 
Union tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits.
 
With the game tied and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Avery Ragsdale hit a walk off home run to deep left field to give the Lady Statesmen the 4-3 victory, securing the series win over Union.
 
Collier was perfect from the plate in game two, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI. The pitching trio of Ellie Cox, Maeve Lavoy, and Grace Pippin combined for seven innings of work in the circle, giving up three runs on five hits and striking out six.
 
The series finally with the Lady Bulldogs is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 23 at University Field. First pitch is 1 p.m.
