CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University women's basketball team (13-14, 9-12 GSC) defeated the Lady Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene University (7-13, 4-15 GSC) 53-45 on Saturday afternoon at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
The Lady Statesmen started the first quarter of play rather slowly, shooting 6-for-22 from the field, putting them out front leading the Lady Trojans 14-5 early on. Although the Lady Trojans forced three turnovers, the Green-and-White answered with 10 points in the paint, all being second chance points.
The Lady Statesmen started the second quarter of play shooting 31% from the field. The Lady Trojans forced five turnovers, but DSU dominated the boards on the defensive end pulling down 23 rebounds by the end of the second quarter of play. DSU forced 10 turnovers, racking up 12 points off turnovers.
Despite a slow start to the second half, the Lady Statesmen forced four TNU turnovers. Senior Wakiryah Daniels ended DSU's scoring drought with a two- point jumper at the 2:40 mark. Although the Lady Trojans shot almost perfectly from the stripe, junior Dakiya Toney answered with a layup right before the end of the third quarter of regulation.
To start the final quarter of play, the Lady Statesmen shot 52% from the field and forced two turnovers early on. DSU was able to dominate in the paint, scoring 10 points inside. Although the Lady Trojans lead in scoring, 15-11, in the fourth quarter of play, the Green-and-White were able to put away the Lady Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene University by a final 53-45.
The Lady Statesmen were led by junior Olivia Allen with 14 points and seniors MaKenzie Hill with 11 points and Daniels with 10 points.
Delta State will wrap up regular season play, as they travel to Clinton to take on the Lady Choctaws of Mississippi College on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m.
