CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (11-3, 6-0 GSC) scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth in their 15-3 win against the Bulldogs of Union University (5-8, 1-4 GSC) Sunday afternoon in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
Delta State had a stellar outing from junior right hander
Christian Clayson, who struck out eight Bulldogs in 5.2 innings pitched in relief earning his first win of the season.
Union got on the scoreboard in the top of the first, scoring all three runs to take a 3-0 lead.
Delta State would chip away as
Jacob Hill would score on an error after stealing third to cut the Statesmen deficit to 3-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Delta State would show discipline at the plate as they had four runs walked in, and one on a hit by pitch to regain the lead at 6-3.
Andin Johnson would clear the bases with a two-run single to center field to make it 8-3. Two-batters later,
Brendan McCauley would add on a run with a rbi single to right center making it 9-3.
In the next inning, Delta State added on three more runs highlighted by a
Brett Burrell rbi single, taking a 12-3 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, McCauley led off the inning with a triple to right center field. On the next at-bat,
Triston Hickman would bring McCauley home with a sacrifice fly to right field. Three batters later with the bases loaded,
Matthew Martinolich would add an rbi pinch hit single to extend the Statesmen lead to 14-3.
Tyler Otts would add the third run in the bottom of the sixth with a bases loaded walk making it 15-3.
In the top of the seventh,
Tate Duncan would add two strikeouts to close the game with a 15-3 final score.
The Statesmen will be back in action this Tuesday afternoon as they welcome the Tigers from Ouachita Baptist to town. The first pitch in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field is at 3:00 p.m. (CDT).
