Statesmen Offense Explodes in Double Header Sweep against Union

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (10-3, 5-0 GSC) won their eighth and ninth straight with a double header sweep against the Bulldogs of Union University (5-7, 1-3 GSC) in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field Saturday afternoon.
 
The Statesmen took game one in run rule fashion with a 17-0 final score, followed by an 12-11 win.
 
Game One
Senior right hander Drake Fontenot threw six innings of hitless ball earning his third win of the season striking out three batters and forcing 12 ground outs.
 
The Statesmen started the scoring in the bottom of the first as Wes Warnock hit a rbi double to make it 1-0. Warnock would score the second run of the inning on a wild pitch.
 
In the next inning, Delta State would erupt for six runs starting with a Jacob Hill rbi double to right center field to make it 3-0. GSC Player of the Week Brett Burrell would add on to the lead with a two-run single to make it 5-0. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Bo Rock would add on to his rbi total this week with a bases clearing three-run double making it 8-0.
 
In the next inning, Dylan Coleman would connect on his third home run of the year with a three-run blast making it 11-0.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Coleman would add on to his RBI collection in game one with a rbi double to centerfield to make it 12-0. On the next at-bat, Burrell added on with a two-run single to right to make it 14-0.
 
The Statesmen added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning starting with a bases loaded walk from Drew Capobianco, making it 15-0. The Statesmen would get back-to-back rbi singles from Cole Thompson and Braiden Jones to make it 17-0.
 
Caleb Smith would come into the seventh inning to finish the game with a ground ball double play
 
Game Two
Dylan Farley struck out seven batters and earned the win going five innings for the Statesmen as Andin Johnson would collect three RBIs including his first home run of the season winning 12-11 in game two.
 
The Bulldogs would strike first, scoring two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Delta State would respond with a three run second inning to regain the lead 3-2. Peyton Badon would start the inning with a rbi single. In the next at-bat with the bases loaded, Capobianco would bring in a run with a walk to tie the game up at 2-2. Jacob Hill would follow up Capobianco's walk with a rbi fielder's choice to give Delta State a 3-2 lead.
 
In the bottom of the third, Delta State would add five runs, three coming off of the long ball from Andin Johnson to make it 8-2.
 
Badon would answer a Bulldog run in the top of the fourth with a rbi single to center field making it 9-3.
 
The Statesmen added three insurance runs featuring a rbi single from Brendan McCauley in the bottom of the sixth making it 12-3.
 
Union would rally back in the top of the seventh before Josh Hill would collect his sixth save of the season keeping Delta State on top 12-11.


The Statesmen and the Bulldogs will play game three of the three-game series at 1:00 p.m. (CDT) on Sunday afternoon at Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
