PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (13-3, 7-0 GSC) got another solid start from senior righty
Drake Fontenot in their 4-0 win against West Florida (7-7, 4-3 GSC) Friday evening in Pensacola.
The Bossier City, La., native threw seven shutout innings striking out eight Argonauts earning his fourth win of the season on the bump. Senior southpaw
Tate Duncan threw two innings in relief, striking out four Argos to close the game.
At the plate, senior right fielder
Brett Burrell continued to add to his strong start to the 2025 season. The Cleveland native went 3-4 at the dish with a two-run triple.
The Statesmen would strike first in the top of the fourth inning as a
Dylan Dendy groundout led to
Dylan Coleman scoring on a throwing error to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the eighth inning,
Drew Capobianco and
Wes Warnock would reach with two singles leading to a Burrell two-run triple to right center field to make it 3-0.
Two batters later,
Andin Johnson would bring Burrell home with a fielder's choice giving Delta State a 4-0 lead.
After a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth, Duncan would strikeout three straight batters to conclude a 4-0 win.
The Statesmen look to win their third straight conference series tomorrow as Delta State and UWF will face off in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
