CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University baseball team (4-3) completed the sweep of Spring Hill College (1-6) by winning game one in run-rule fashion, 19-8, and game two, 7-6.
GAME ONE
The Statesmen bats were active early, as they took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Dylan Coleman sent a 2-RBI double through the left side, scoring
Wes Warnock and
Jacob Hill.
Brett Burrell later brought Coleman around to score on a single to right field. Burrell later scored when
Peyton Badon singled to center field.
The Badgers responded in their next at-bat, scoring three runs on one hit and a couple of DSU errors. Scoring three more runs in the bottom of frame, the Statesmen extended its lead to 7-3. Burrell hit an RBI single to score Coleman, followed by a Badon 2-RBI single to center field, scoring Burrell and
Andin Johnson.
Delta State's offense continued its attack, scoring four more runs on three hits and a Spring Hill error in the bottom of the third. Warnock doubled, Coleman and
Dylan Dendy singled, and Burrell scored Dendy on a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 11-3.
Over the next two innings, the Statesmen added eight more runs, taking a 19-4 lead, with homeruns from Coleman and Burrell and RBIs from Dendy and Johnson.
Spring Hill added a four-spot in the visitor half of the seventh for the Statesmen to secure the 19-8 win in the second game of the series.
GAME TWO
The Badgers jumped out to an early 3-0 game in the series finale, but Delta State responded in the home half of the first when
Braiden Jones walked with the bases loaded, to cut the lead to 3-1.
Spring Hill extended its lead to 5-1 in the second before
Drew Capobianco hit his first homer of the season, cutting the deficit back to three runs.
Jacob Hill hit a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the third, later coming around to score on a wild pitch, to give the Statesmen their first lead of the game, 7-5.
SHC scored one more run in the fourth, but stellar pitching from
Logan Cromer,
Tate Duncan, and
Josh Hill in relief secured the win and the sweep for Delta State.
FROM THE MOUND
Dylan Farley (1-0) recorded his first win as a Statesman in game one of the doubleheader, going 5.0 innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits with seven strikeouts.
Logan Eldridge got the no decision as the starter, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up six runs, four earned, on five hits and striking out two. In relief, Cromer (2-0) put up 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Also in relief, Duncan and Hill combined for the final 1.2 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out three. Hill earned his second save of the season.
FROM THE BATTERS BOX
Coleman led DSU in game one, going 4-for-4 with four RBI and five runs scored. Burrell added a perfect 3-for-3 game with four RBI and three runs scored. Hill, Dendy, Johnson, and Badon added multiple hits.
Jacob Hill led the offense in game two, going 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Burrell,
Tyler Janos, and Capobianco each added a hit.
