ALBERTVILLE, Ala. – The Delta State University Softball Team (3-1, 0-0 GSC) split their two games in the final day of the Charger Chillout Sunday at the Sand Mountain Park in Albertville, Ala.
Delta State started their morning with 10 hits as a team but fell short to the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern State University 8-5. The Lady Statesmen bounced back in the afternoon with a 7-5 win over the Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan College.
Game One
The Lady Statesmen offense provided 10 hits but fell to the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern State University 8-5 in the early game. The Delta State lineup had eight different hitters contributed to the afternoon.
After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, an
Abbi Cataldo rbi single tied the game back up at 1-1 after one inning of play.
After a two-run top of the fourth inning for the Hurricanes, Delta State would explode for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning starting with a rbi single from
Calli McConnell that would score Cataldo, cutting the Lady Statesmen deficit to 3-2. On the next at-bat,
Emma Collier tied the game up at 3-3 with a rbi double to left center.
The Lady Statesmen would re-gain the lead with back-to-back rbi singles from
Mattie Granberry and
Mary Teague to give DSU a 5-4 lead.
GSW scored two runs in the top of the fifth and seventh innings to hold on to a 8-5 win.
Game Two
The Lady Statesmen bounced back in the afternoon with a roller coaster of a win over the Panthers from Kentucky Wesleyan 7-5.
After two and a half scoreless innings between DSU and KWC, Delta State would put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third starting with Collier scoring on a wild pitch. After an
Ally Agner single,
Bailey Way would hit the first Lady Statesmen home run of the season with a two-run shot to left center making it 3-0.
The Panthers did not go away as they scored five runs in the top of the fourth before the Lady Statesmen tied the game back up at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth with a rbi double from Collier and a rbi single from Granberry.
In the next inning, Delta State re-gained the lead with a McConnell rbi single and a Collier rbi to make it 7-5.
Maeve Lavoy would get the win in the circle for the Lady Statesmen as the JUCO transfer went 2 1/3 innings with three punch outs.
Emma Enderud would come into the game in the seventh inning to get her first save of the season for the green and white.
Delta State will make a trip to Jackson, Tenn., Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference double header with the Dragons from Lane College. The first pitch on Wednesday will be at 2:00 p.m. (CDT)
