MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (17-5, 10-2 GSC) was on the better end of a 20-11 slug fest against the Boll Weevils from the University of Arkansas at Monticello (13-9, 8-4 GAC) Tuesday afternoon in Weevil Field at Union Bank Park.
The middle of the order for Delta State was finding ways to reach base as the 3-7 spots would combine to go 15-26 at the plate with 16 runs driven in on three home runs and a double. That middle of the order was highlighted by
Brett Burrell who went 3-6 with a home run a double five rbis and was a triple away from the cycle. The Statesmen had 20 runs on 19 hits in the contest with nine players in the starting lineup collecting a hit in the contest.
The Statesmen would show discipline at the plate as well with 13 walks in the winning effort.
Delta State would start the game with a blast as
Jacob Hill would hit his first Statesmen career home run to lead off the game giving the Statesmen an early 1-0 lead. Three batters later,
Dylan Coleman would add on with a rbi single into left to extend the lead to 2-0. Two batters later with the bases loaded,
Bo Rock would collect his first two rbis of the day with a single up the middle pushing DSU ahead 4-0.
In the top of the second, the Statesmen would use the long ball to score four more runs, collecting an early 8-0 lead.
Brett Burrell would hit a long home run into the Softball field in left to make it 6-0. Two batters later,
Brendan McCauley connects with his first home run of the 2025 season that stayed inside the foul pole to make it 8-0.
After giving up two runs in the bottom of the third, DSU would answer with three runs with two rbi singles from McCauley and Rock and a rbi ground out from
Drew Capobianco to make it 11-2.
UAM would answer the Statesmen's three run fourth with three runs to make it 11-5 through four innings.
In the top of the fifth, Delta State added eight runs on six hits including a rbi single and a two run double from Burrell. McCauley would add a two-run single to the mix to make it 19-5.
After UAM scored five unanswered runs,
Bo Rock would hit a towering solo home run over the tall right field fence in the top of the eighth inning making it 20-10.
UAM would add a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but
Christian Clayson would throw two innings adding three strikeouts to close the game out with a 20-11 win.
Tate Duncan would earn his first win of the season as he went an inning and a third striking out three Weevil batters.
The Statesmen return to Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field this weekend for a three-game series with the Blazers from Valdosta State University. Friday will feature the double header starting at 2:00 p.m. (CDT).
