CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (19-5, 12-2 GSC) clicked on all cylinders in a double header sweep against the Blazers from Valdosta State (13-12, 9-4 GSC) Friday afternoon at Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
At the plate, the green and white got six rbis from
Bo Rock in the double header sweep. Senior right hander
Drake Fontenot continued to stay hot on the mound collecting win number six on the season as he threw 7.1 innings pitched.
GAME ONE
The Statesmen got the better end of a pitchers dual as Fontenot threw seven shut out innings with four strikeouts and only gave up three hits.
Josh Hill continued collect saves this season as he threw 1.2 innings to earn his eighth save of the year.
Delta State got on the board in the bottom of the first with a solo shot to left field off the bat of
Brett Burrell to give DSU a 1-0 lead. Burrell went 1-3 in game one with a walk as well.
In the bottom of the fourth, Rock would extend the Statesmen lead to 3-0 with a two-run single through the right side of the infield that scored Burrell and
Dylan Coleman. Coleman went 3-3 at the plate in game one.
The Statesmen added another run in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly from
Drew Capobianco to make it 4-0.
In the top of the eighth, VSU would add a run to cut it to 4-1 before Hill would close the door for save no. eight on the season.
GAME TWO
The Statesmen bats came alive in game two scoring 15 runs on 15 hits including two three-hit performances from
Wes Warnock and
Brendan McCauley.
DSU started with a bang scoring six runs in the bottom of the first starting with another Burrell home run to center field. This one a two-run shot to give the green and white a 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Capobianco would take one for the team bringing in a run on a hit by pitch making it 3-0. On the next at-bat,
Jacob Hill would bring in two runs with a single while advancing on an error to make it 6-0.
In the next inning, Delta State would pour on three more runs with back-to-back rbi hits with a rbi double from
Cole Thompson followed by a two-run single from Capobianco making it 9-0.
After a run in the top of the third from Valdosta State, Rock would extend the lead in grand fashion with a grand slam to left field to extend the Statesmen lead to 13-1. In the next inning,
Matthew Martinolich would add his first home run of the season with a solo blast over the left center field fence to make it 14-1.
After a five-run top of the fifth from Valdosta, Burrell would add another rbi to his season total with a rbi fielder's choice making it 15-6.
The Statesmen finish the two-game sweep with a 15-7 final score.
Dylan Farley collected his fifth win of the season, going four innings and striking out three Blazers.
The two teams are on the diamond tomorrow afternoon for a 1:00 p.m., (CDT) first pitch series finale.
