CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Softball Team (9-10, 5-8 GSC) lost both games in the double header against the Blazers from Valdosta State University (13-11, 9-4 GSC) this afternoon in a windy University Field.
Valdosta State won game one 8-5 and game two 10-4.
GAME ONE
The Lady Statesmen had a late rally that fell short in an 8-5 game one loss to the Blazers. The rally was kicked off by a solo home run from
Emma Collier. Collier went 1-2 at the plate with a rbi and was hit by a pitch twice in the contest.
After falling behind 7-0, Delta State would answer in the bottom of the fifth with a
Abbi Cataldo rbi single to make it 7-1.
In the next inning, Collier would lead off the inning with a solo home run to right field to cut the lead to 8-2. In the same half inning, a hit by pitch and walk would lead to a two-run single from
Calli McConnell as Delta State cut the Blazer lead in half at 8-4. The Lady Statesmen would have the tying run reach the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Delta State would continue to rally, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh on a fielding error to make it 8-5. The Blazers would shut the door taking game one 8-5.
Emma Enderud would tie her season high five strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.
GAME TWO
The Lady Statesmen had a two-hit performance from
Kyleigh Wheaton in game two including a triple down the right field line in the bottom of the fifth.
Wheaton got the scoring started for DSU in the bottom of the first with a rbi single to even the game up at 1-1.
In the next inning, Delta State would grab the lead with a rbi single from
Rylee Leonard to give DSU a 2-1 lead. Leonard went 1-2 in game two.
After a four-run third from VSU,
Emma Collier would start a rally with a rbi single in the bottom of the third making it 5-3.
VSU would add five in the top of the fourth, leading to a 10-4 game two win.
The Two teams will be back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon at University Field. Tomorrow's first pitch is scheduled at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
