CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (19-6, 12-3 GSC) fell short of a comeback in a 7-5 loss to the Blazers from Valdosta State University (14-12, 10-4 GSC) Sunday afternoon in Ferriss Field.
Down 7-0, Delta State rallied back to cut the deficit to 7-5 with a two-run seventh and a three-run eighth. The Statesmen had the tying run on first in the bottom of the ninth.
On the mound,
Christian Clayson threw five innings and struck out six Blazers in relief.
Valdosta State took an early lead with three runs in the top of the first, followed by a run in the second inning. Three more runs were scored in the fifth to give VSU a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Andin Johnson led the inning off with a solo home run to center field to put DSU on the board starting the rally. Four batters later,
Wes Warnock would collect his 13
th RBI of the season with a single through the right-side scoring
Cole Thompson making it 7-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, Delta State would pull a two out rally starting with a two-run double from
Matthew Martinolich cutting the Blazer lead to 7-4. On the next at-bat, Thompson would bring home Johnson with a rbi groundout making it a two-run game.
Valdosta would keep the lead in the bottom of the ninth as Delta State would threaten to tie it up with the tying run on first to win 7-5.
Delta State will be back in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field Tuesday afternoon as they will face off against the Wonder Boys from Arkansas Tech University. The first pitch for Tuesday afternoon is set for 3:00 p.m. (CDT).
