CLINTON, Miss. – The Delta State University Women's Basketball Team (13-15, 9-13 GSC) fell on the road against the Choctaws from Mississippi College (15-13, 11-11 GSC) 60-48 Saturday afternoon in the A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton.
Redshirt senior
Dakiya Toney recorded her fourth double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Senior guard
Wakiryah Daniels also scored double digits adding 10 points and collecting a steal.
After an MC 7-0 run to start the game, Delta State responded with a 12-1 run in just under six minutes to close out the opening quarter with a 12-8 lead.
Madi Kate Vuncannon connected with two three pointers to score six points in the opening quarter.
The Lady Statesmen kept their momentum into the second quarter starting with a 9-2 run headlined by Toney and
Olivia Allen. Allen scored eight points in the afternoon.
The Lady Statesmen managed to lead 28-26 going into the halftime break. Vuncannon led all scorers with nine points at the break.
In the third quarter,
Martyna Czescik scored five points as she also grabbed four rebounds and collected three steals. MC took a 42-37 lead going into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter Daniels the first four points of the quarter keeping the Lady Statesmen within a possession of the Choctaws. Daniels would score seven points in the fourth quarter, but the Choctaws would hold on to win 60-48.
With the loss, the Lady Statesmen are eliminated from post season competition as they finish with a 13-15 overall record and a 9-13 record in Gulf South Conference play.
