LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Senior right-handed pitcher
Drake Fontenot pitched a complete game shutout as the Delta State University Baseball Team (20-7, 13-3 GSC) defeated the Tigers from the University of West Alabama 6-0 Friday afternoon at Tartt Field in Livingston.
The Bossier City, La., native struck out five West Alabama hitters and only gave up four hits and one walk as he went the distance for the green and white. Fontenot only allowed a runner in scoring position once throughout the nine innings pitched
At the plate, senior shortstop
Matthew Martinolich went 3-4 at the plate with a stolen base as well.
Wes Warnock drove in two runs going 1-4 with a walk in the win.
The Statesmen got on the board early, scoring four runs in the top of the second with a two-run double from
Drew Capobianco, a bases loaded walk from
Cole Thompson, and a rbi groundout from Warnock to push DSU ahead 4-0.
In the top of the sixth, Delta State would add a run with a two-out rbi single from
Brendan McCauley to make it 5-0.
Warnock would add his second rbi of the game and his 15
th of the season with a double to left field in the top of the eighth giving Delta State a 6-0 lead.
Delta State will be back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon for a double header to finish the three-game series with the Tigers starting a 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
