LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (22-7, 15-3 GSC) completed a three-game sweep against the Tigers from the University of West Alabama (16-15, 10-8 GSC) Saturday afternoon in Tartt Field in Livingston, Ala.
The Statesmen won game one in 12 innings 6-5 and followed it up with a 1-0 game two win.
GAME ONE
Delta State came out on top of a back-and-forth game one to clinch a series win in 12 innings.
Josh Hill earned his first win of the season as he pitched two innings and forced three ground outs and two fly outs.
Delta State scored two runs in the top of the first with back-to-back bases loaded walks from
Bo Rock and
Andin Johnson to take a 2-0 lead. Delta State had nine walks as a team in game one of the double header.
In the top of the fifth with the score tied up at two,
Brendan McCauley would give DSU the lead with a rbi single to left making it 3-2.
After West Alabama tied the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth,
Matthew Martinolich would give Delta State the lead back with a two-run home run to left field to make it 5-3.
After West Alabama tied the game up at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth, the two teams would remain scoreless going into extra innings.
In the top of the 12
th,
Dylan Dendy would rip a two-out double down the left field line that scored
Wes Warnock to give the green and white a 6-5 lead.
Josh Hill would shut the Tigers down in order in the bottom of the 12
th to clinch a series win with a 6-5 win.
GAME TWO
The Statesmen would be in a pitcher's dual in game two as
Logan Eldridge would prevent the Tigers from scoring posting the second complete game shutout by a Statesmen pitcher this weekend.
Eldridge went seven innings striking out four batters to earn his third win of the season putting him at 3-2 overall.
Delta State would score the lone run in the top of the seventh as a Warnock infield single scored
Tyler Janos giving the green and white a 1-0 lead with three more outs to go.
West Alabama would threaten in the bottom of the seventh with the winning run on first, but Eldridge shut the door with a strikeout to end the game, completing the three-game sweep.
Delta State will hit the road Tuesday afternoon for a mid-week non-conference road trip to Magnolia, Ark., to take on the Muleriders from Southern Arkansas University. The first pitch for Tuesday afternoon is set for 3:00 p.m. (CDT).
