Eight Run Sixth Leads To A Doubleheader Sweep for No. 8 Delta State

Statesmen hit seven home runs in double header sweep

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (24-8, 17-3) rallied from being down seven and used the long ball in their double header sweep against the Chargers from the University of Alabama at Huntsville (14-17, 7-13 GSC) Friday afternoon in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
 
The Statesmen rallied for an exciting 10-8 extra inning win in game one and followed it up with a 12-7 win to clinch their fourth straight series win.
 
GAME ONE
The Statesmen used the long ball in game one as senior third baseman Dylan Coleman hit not one, not two, but three home runs including the walk-off home run to win 10-8 in game one.
 
Coleman went 3-5 with three runs driven in as the top of the order drove in eight runs while going 11-22.
 
After two scoreless innings, Delta State would get on the board first with a rbi single from Brendan McCauley in the bottom of the third to give the green and white a 1-0 lead.
 
Delta State would add on to their lead in the following inning with a four-run bottom of the fourth inning on three straight at-bats starting with another rbi single from McCauley to make it 2-0. Brett Burrell would follow up McCauley with a two-run blast to left field to make it 4-0. Coleman would follow Burrell up with back-to-back home runs with his first of three to center field to make it 5-0.
 
UAH would not go away as the Chargers would score three runs in the top of the fifth to make it 5-3. Coleman would answer in the bottom of the sixth with his second home run to left center field to make it 6-3.
The Chargers would grab the lead for the first time in game one with four runs in the top of the seventh with a three-run triple to make it 7-6.
 
The Statesmen answered with a sacrifice fly from Drew Capobianco to even the game up at 7-7 in the bottom half of the seventh.
 
A home run in the top of the eighth inning would give UAH an 8-7 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
 
Delta State would not go away as Capobianco would reach on an infield single, scoring Tyler Otts to tie the game up at 8-8 sending game one to extra innings.
 
In the extra frame Burrell led the inning off with a single up the middle followed by the third home run from Coleman to walk off game one with a 10-8 Statesmen win.
 
GAME TWO
The Statesmen rallied back from 7-0 in game two with 12 unanswered runs including an eight-run bottom of the sixth to win 12-7.
 
After trailing 7-0, Dylan Dendy would get the rally started for DSU with a two-run blast to right field to make it 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
 
 In the next inning, Jacob Hill would connect with his second home run of the year with a two-run home run to left field to make it 7-4.
 
Delta State regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with eight runs across the board starting with a three-straight singles from Burrell, Coleman and a rbi single from Dendy to make it 7-5. On the next at-bat, Tyler Janos would rip a double down the right field line to make it 7-6. Two batters later, Dendy would score on a wild pitch to tie the game up 7-7. On the next at-bat, Capobianco would give Delta State the lead with a three-run home run to right field to make it 10-7. As the Statesmen would get to the top of the order, Burrell and Coleman would get back-to-back rbi singles to make it 12-7.
 
The Statesmen would shut down the Chargers in the top of the seventh after a lead off walk to complete the double header sweep.
 
UP NEXT
The Statesmen and the Chargers will play the series finale tomorrow in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
