MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (14-5, 8-2 GSC) had eight scoreless innings from right-handed pitcher
Drake Fontenot in their 6-1 win against the Buccaneers from Christian Brothers University (6-12, 1-9 GSC) Friday afternoon from Nadicksbernd Field.
Fontenot tied his season high with 11 strikeouts in eight innings while keeping CBU scoreless in his fifth win of the season. The Bossier City native is now 5-0 on the season.
At the plate, the Statesmen had three players with two hit performances in
Wes Warnock,
Dylan Coleman, and
Dylan Dendy as Delta State would show plate discipline forcing seven walks.
The green and white struck early scoring four runs in the top of the first with four walks and two hit batters along with a rbi single from Dendy to make it 4-0 early on.
Delta State added two runs onto their lead in the top of the seventh inning starting with a rbi groundout off the bat of
Andin Johnson making it 5-0. On the next at-bat, Dendy would rip a line drive over the left fielders head to score Coleman to make it 6-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, Fontenot would finish his start with a bang punching out three batters to keep DSU ahead 6-0.
CBU would add a run in the bottom of the ninth, but
Ryan Herbison shut the door for Delta State's 6-1 win.
The Statesmen and the Bucs meet again tomorrow with a doubleheader at Nadicksbernd Field starting at noon.
