MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (16-5, 10-2 GSC) swept the Buccaneers from Christian Brothers University (6-14, 1-11 GSC) Saturday afternoon in Nadicksbernd Field in Memphis.
The No. 13 ranked Statesmen won game one in run rule fashion by a 14-2 win in eight innings. The Statesmen followed up the run rule win with a 5-2 game two win.
At the plate,
Dylan Coleman went deep three times in the 14-2 win.
GAME ONE
The Statesmen would get a solid start from
Dylan Farley and three home runs from
Dylan Coleman as the green and white would win game one 14-2. Farley threw six innings and struck out six CBU batters.
The Buccaneers score a run in the first and second inning to pull ahead 2-0. In the top of the third,
Triston Hickman would get the first of Delta State's 12 hits with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Delta State would cut the CBU lead to 2-1 on a
Drew Capobianco rbi sac fly.
In the next inning, Coleman would take a 3-1 pitch over the tall centerfield fence to tie the game up at 2-2.
The Statesmen would gain the lead on a six run fifth inning starting with a two-run double from
Wes Warnock. On the next at-bat,
Brendan McCauley added to the lead with a rbi single making it 5-2.
Brett Burrell would add on to the rally as Burrell would rip a two-run double to left center to extend the lead to 7-2. Two batters later,
Dylan Dendy would drive in the sixth run of the inning with a fielder's choice to make it 8-2.
Delta State was not finished as they would add three more runs in the top of the sixth starting with a rbi sac fly from McCauley to make it 9-2. Two batters later, Coleman would hit a two-run home run to left field to make it 11-2.
Two innings later, Coleman would connect with home run number three of the game with a three-run blast over the right field fence to make it 14-2.
Adrian Byrd would strike out the side in the bottom of the eighth to clinch a 14-2 win.
GAME TWO
The Statesmen got another solid start from
Logan Eldridge and an impressive two-hit afternoon from
Cole Thompson as they completed the three-game sweep with a 5-2 win over CBU.
Eldridge threw six innings and struck out six Buccaneers en route to his second win of the season.
The Statesmen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third with a rbi double to right center field off the bat of
Brett Burrell.
CBU would respond with a two-run bottom half of the fourth inning to regain a 2-1 lead.
Burrell would lead off the top of the sixth with a walk. After a stolen base and advancing to third on a groundout, Burrell would score on a rbi single from
Brendan McCauley to tie the game up at 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, Thompson would hit his first collegiate home run to right field to give DSU a 3-2 lead. The Statesmen would add on some insurance runs with a Burrell sacrifice fly and a wild pitch to make it 5-2.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Josh Hill would close the game earning his seventh save of the season.
The Statesmen are back on the diamond Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Monticello, Ark., to take on the Boll Weevils from the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
