Fontenot Tosses Second Complete Game of the Year as No. 12 Statesmen Take Game One Against Trojans

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (28-11, 20-5 GSC) defeated the Trojans from Trevecca Nazarene University (15-23, 11-14 GSC) 7-2 Friday afternoon in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
 
The Statesmen were paced by senior right-handed pitcher Drake Fontenot along with a five-run bottom of the fifth inning.
 
Fontenot tossed his second complete game of the season as he struck out three batters and only gave up one earned run along with allowing no walks.
 
Center fielder Wes Warnock had a successful day at the plate in the lead off spot for the green and white. The Vicksburg native went 3-5 with two runs driven in.
 
DSU and TNU were scoreless before a home run gave the visiting Trojans a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. TNU would add a run in the top of the fifth inning on an error to make it 2-0.
 
The five-run bottom of the fifth would start with back-to-back singles from Cole Thompson and Warnock. Thompson would score from a rbi single from Dylan Dendy to cut the Trojan lead to 2-1. On the next at-bat, Warnock would score from a rbi single from Bo Rock to tie the game up at 2-2.
 
With two outs and two runs on, Braiden Jones would hit an opposite field, three-run blast to give the Statesmen a 5-2 lead.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Warnock would add on to the Statesmen lead with a two-run infield single to make it 7-2.
Fontenot would only allow one base runner in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings as he finished the complete game with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth to win 7-2.
 
The Statesmen and the Trojans will finish the three-game series with a double header tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (CDT) from Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field. Delta State will honor their 2025 hall of fame class before the game at 12:40 p.m. (CDT).
