CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (29-13, 21-7 GSC) fell in the three-game series opener to Auburn Montgomery (12-30, 9-19 GSC) 9-7 this afternoon in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
The Statesmen had 11 hits including two home runs one from
Dylan Coleman and
Preston Soper.
Down 1-0 going into the bottom of the third, the Statesmen would respond with back-to-back RBI hits with a rbi double to center off the bat of
Brett Burrell to tie the game up at 1-1. Coleman would follow up Burrell's double with a two-run blast to center field to make it 3-1.
AUM would tie the game up at 3-3 with a run in the fourth and sixth innings before a four-run seventh to take a 7-3 lead.
Dylan Dendy would drive in a run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-4.
The Warhawks would add to the lead with two runs in the eighth inning to make it 9-4.
With a chance to get back into the game, Delta State would cut the deficit to 9-5 with a sacrifice fly from
Brendan McCauley in the bottom of the eighth.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Statesmen would get a two-out home run from Soper to make it 9-7 before the Warhawks would get the third out to win it.
Both teams will be back at it with a double header in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field starting at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
