No. 12 Statesmen Take Game One at Montevallo Behind Stellar Outing From Fontenot

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (27-8, 19-3) had a stellar outing from senior right-handed pitcher Drake Fontenot in a 7-1 win against the Falcons from the University of Montevallo (18-18, 9-13) Friday afternoon in Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.
 
The Bossier City, La., native threw eight innings and struck out nine falcons and only gave up one run on a lead off home run. Fontenot earned the win improving to 8-0 on the season.
 
After falling behind via a lead off home run, Delta State wouldn't panic as they would add seven consecutive runs starting with a two-run top of the third with run scored on a double play followed by a rbi single from Dylan Dendy to give the Statesmen a 2-1 lead.
 
The Statesmen would take advantage from two Falcon errors, leading to three of four runs in the top of the fourth inning starting with an RBI single from Brendan McCauley to make it 3-1. Dylan Coleman would add on to the lead with a rbi single up the middle with two outs to make it 4-1. On the next at-bat, Dendy would continue his tremendous day at the plate with a single that would get by the Center fielder leading to two runs to extend the lead to 6-1.
 
Delta State would add another run in the top of the fifth inning with a rbi single from Wes Warnock to extend the lead to 7-1.
 
With a runner on first and one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Statesmen would get a web gem 5-4-3 double play as Coleman would play it off the hop to end the inning.
 
The Statesmen and the Falcons will finish up the three-game series tomorrow afternoon with a double header starting a noon in Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.
