CLEVELAND, Miss – The Delta State University Baseball Team (27-11, 19-5 GSC) lost to the Boll Weevils from the University of Arkansas at Monticello (22-16, 14-10 GSC) 7-6 this afternoon in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
Senior first baseman
Dylan Dendy and senior outfielder
Wes Warnock collected three hits on the afternoon as Dendy drove in three runs.
After falling behind 7-0,
Brett Burrell got the Statesmen on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1.
In the next inning, Delta State would add two more runs to cut the deficit to four runs starting with a lead off home run from Dendy. After a walk and an error,
Cole Thompson would add another run to the board with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, Delta State added three runs to make it a one run game with a chance to tie or take the lead starting with a two-run single from Dendy. The Statesmen would put the third run across with a run scored from an error to make it 7-6.
Delta State in the bottom of the ninth would get a hit from
Wes Warnock, but the Weevils would hold on to a 7-6 win.
The Statesmen will be back in action this Friday as they will host the Trojans from Trevecca Nazarene University. Friday's first pitch is set to start at 2:00 p.m. (CDT) in Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
