OXFORD, Ala. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (32-18, 23-10 GSC) fell out of the GSC Championship Tournament this afternoon after suffering losses to the University of Montevallo and Mississippi College this afternoon in Eastern Alabama.
The Statesmen's late rally in game one fell short to the Falcons with a 7-6 final Sunday morning in Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium on the campus of Jacksonville State University. Later in the afternoon, Delta State dropped an elimination game to Mississippi College 9-3 at Choccolocco Park.
GAME ONE
A late rally from the Statesmen after three delays due to Fog fell short in a 7-6 loss against Montevallo Sunday afternoon.
Dylan Coleman went 4-5 in the loss with three rbis including a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth after the game was suspended, due to the dense fog advisory in Jacksonville, Ala.
Delta State fell behind early to the Falcons 4-0 before
Brett Burrell would put the Statesmen on the board, trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the third. On the next at-bat, Coleman would drive in Burrell with a rbi triple to right field.
With a run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, Montevallo pulled ahead 7-2 going into the bottom of the eighth where
Andin Johnson would drive in a run to make it 7-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Burrell would bring in two runs on an error, leading to the game being suspended with two runners on with two outs leading to a two-run single from Coleman to make it 7-6. On the next at-bat,
Dylan Dendy would hit a hard hit fly out to right center field, ending the game.
GAME TWO
Delta State would have ten hits in game two in a 9-3 loss to the Choctaws from Mississippi College.
The Statesmen would get two-hit performances from Coleman,
Dylan Dendy,
Bo Rock and
Wes Warnock in the elimination game.
The three Statesmen runs would come across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3 with back-to-back rbis, starting with a rbi ground out from Burrell and a two-run blast to center field from Coleman.
The Choctaws would add two insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings to make it a 9-3 final score.
With the loss, the Statesmen will now await the 2025 NCAA Division II Selection Show next Sunday night to see if Delta State will earn one of the eight berths into the South Region next week. The Statesmen were ranked no. 4 in the regional rankings released Wednesday, April 27.
