CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Men's Soccer had a strong defensive performance Sunday afternoon, earning a 0-0 draw against Spring Hill at Delta Field.
The Statesmen controlled much of the first half, out shooting the Badgers 10-6 and applying consistent pressure in the attacking third. Delta State's midfield, anchored by
Braden Taylor and
Ajay Stewart, dictated possession and created several dangerous chances. Both
Ryan Thistle and Santi Rossi forced saves that kept Spring Hill on their heels early.
On the back line, the defensive unit of
Logan Funk,
Eduardo Guevara, and
Landon Cox stayed organized and denied Spring Hill any rhythm offensively. Goalkeeper
Mason Baglio was steady in net, collecting two saves and recording his first shutout of the year.
Despite eight corner kicks and six shots on goal, the Statesmen were unable to find the breakthrough, but their effort reflected the growth and resiliency of a young squad. The defense held firm even as Spring Hill pushed late, turning away every opportunity.
The result moves Delta State to 1-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in GSC play, while Spring Hill stands at 0-3-1. The Statesmen will continue conference play next weekend as they head to Jackson, Tenn., to take on Union University Friday evening and follow that up with a match against Christian Brothers University Sunday at Delta Field.
