JACKSON, Tenn. – The Delta State University Women's Soccer Team earned a point with a 0-0 draw on the road against Union University at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex.
The Lady Statesmen (1-2-4, 0-0-3 GSC) showcased resilience and attacking creativity throughout the 90-minute contest, outshooting the Bulldogs 23-13 while securing their second shutout of the year.
Senior goalkeeper
Piper Burgess anchored the defensive effort, recording
five saves – including three in the second half – to preserve the clean sheet. Burgess commanded the penalty area with poise and made several crucial stops to deny Union's late-game pushes.
Delta State's offense set the tone early and maintained pressure, firing
11 shots on goal compared to Union's five.
Millie Congerton led the attack with a game-high
seven shots and three on target, constantly testing the Bulldog defense. Midfielders
Chloe Colquhoun and
Casey Stalder added a combined seven attempts, while
Emma Earwood nearly broke the deadlock in the 21st minute with a strike that ricocheted off the woodwork.
The Lady Statesmen also held a
4-3 edge in corner kicks, creating quality opportunities in the attacking third. Defensively, the back line led by
Ava Steven, Kennedi Banar, and Mackenzie Winters kept Union's forwards in check, limiting their chances inside the box.
The Green and White return to Delta Field Sunday with a conference clash with the Lady Bucs from Christian Brothers University at 1:00 p.m. (CDT)
