CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University women's soccer team delivered its most complete performance of the season Sunday afternoon at Delta Field, earning a decisive
7–0 victory over Christian Brothers University in Gulf South Conference play.
The Lady Statesmen (2-2-4, 1-0-3 GSC) controlled the match from the opening whistle, notching
four goals in the first half and finishing with
seven different goal scorers.
Caroline Chandler opened the scoring in the 14th minute, pouncing on a rebound off a corner to give Delta State an early lead. Just five minutes later,
Millie Congerton doubled the advantage on a composed finish off an assist from
Emma Earwood.
The offensive surge continued as
Kennedi Banar netted her first goal of the season in the 28th minute before
Chloe Colquhoun struck just before halftime, sending the Lady Statesmen into the break with a commanding 4–0 cushion.
Delta State wasted no time extending its lead after halftime when
Janya Gonzalez found the back of the net just 25 seconds into the second half. Fresh legs off the bench sealed the rout as
Raegan Tucker converted a 76th-minute effort, assisted by
Ava Webster, and
Avery Hooker added the final tally a minute later.
The Lady Statesmen's back line and goalkeepers were equally impressive, combining for their second shutout of the season. Starter
Piper Burgess made four saves in 66 minutes of action, while
Kim Bircher preserved the clean sheet with a save in the closing stretch. The defensive unit limited the Lady Buccaneers to just five shots on target.
Delta State held a
21–9 advantage in total shots and won the corner kick battle,
10–5, while committing just six fouls in the match.
The Lady Statesmen return to Gulf South Conference action next weekend, traveling to Mississippi College on Saturday, October 4
th at 3:00 p.m. (CDT).
