PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Delta State University Women's Basketball team (7-5, 5-2 GSC) rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit and had a chance to steal it late, but West Florida edged the Lady Statesmen 64–63 Friday night in a Gulf South Conference contest at the UWF Field House.
Delta State struggled to find rhythm early but stayed within striking distance heading into the fourth quarter with a 45-39 deficit heading into the final quarter
The Lady Statesmen responded in the second half with improved defensive pressure and a more balanced offensive attack.
Jariyah Williamson sparked the comeback, finishing with a team-high
15 points on a Lady Statesmen season high seven field goals made, while
Dakiya Toney added
11 points and
Daniela Gintere chipped in
10 as Delta State methodically cut into the deficit.
Delta State showed a strong performance on the defensive end, forcing the Argonauts to turn the ball over 22 times
Delta State outscored West Florida 36–23 over the final 20 minutes and tied the game late in the fourth quarter. The teams traded baskets down the stretch before West Florida took a 64–63 lead with a layup the closing seconds.
Delta State had one final possession, but the potential game-winning attempt did not fall as the Argonauts held on for the one-point victory.
With the loss, Delta State moves to
7–5 overall and 5–2 in Gulf South Conference play, while West Florida improves to
7–4 overall and 4–2 in the GSC.
Delta State returns to action Sunday afternoon as they head to Valdosta, Ga., to take on the Blazers from Valdosta State University at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
