Statesmen Head North For Two-Game Stretch with CBU and Union

Cleveland, Miss. - The Delta State University Men's basketball team (7-9, 4-7 GSC) will be on the road all weekend for two more Gulf South Conference games. On Thursday at 7:00 PM, the Statesmen will travel to Memphis, TN to tip-off against the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers University (2-13, 1-10 GSC). On Saturday at 4:00 PM, the Statesmen will travel to Jackson, TN to face the Bulldogs of Union University (7-10, 3-8 GSC)

Scouting the Statesmen:
  • The Statesmen are looking to bounce back after an in-state loss to Mississippi College last weekend in Clinton. Delta State enters this weekend with a 7-9 overall record and are 4-7 in the Gulf South Conference.
  • Dacory Porter, Bryce Clayton, and Je'Marion Westbrook average double-digit points per game. Porter scored 14 points last time out for the Statesmen last Saturday in Clinton against MC. Clayton enters this weekend averaging 13.1 points per game. Westbrook scored 12 points and grabbed
  • Dacory Porter is shooting just under 50% from the field, while Bryce Clayton is shooting just under 40% from beyond the arc.
Scouting the Bucs:
  • The Buccaneers have struggled thus far, entering this weekend with a 2-13 overall record and a 1-10 record in conference play and have lost 6 straight after a conference win on December 20th.
  • Marquis Gill leads the Bucs, averaging over 18 points per game. In the two games last weekend, Gill averaged 27 points per game as he scored 31 against Trevecca Nazarene and 23 against Lee
  • Gill also leads in 3PT made, with 36 on the season. The Middleton, N.Y., native is currently shooting 34% from beyond the arch.
Scouting the Bulldogs:
  • Union enters this weekend with a 7-10 overall record and a 3-8 record in conference play. Last weekend, the Bulldogs are entering this weekend on a six-game losing streak dating back to December 20th when they defeated Montevallo 67-63 in Jackson.
  • Terrence Ringo Jr., Will Lovings-Watts, and Jamiir Allen average double-digit points. Ringo Jr. enters this weekend averaging 17.6 points per game and is pulling down 9.7 rebounds per game and 36 blocks on the year.
  • Allen enters this weekend averaging 10.2 points per game. The Milwaukee native leads the Bulldogs in assists with 48 and steals with 24.
