Statesmen Welcome Montevallo and AUM for a Two-Game Weekend Slate

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University Men's Basketball Team (7-10, 4-8 GSC) are back in action this weekend for a two-game home stretch as they host the Warhawks from Auburn University at Montgomery and the Falcons from the University of Montevallo. 

The Statesmen will host the Warhawks from AUM this afternoon for pajama night at 7:30 p.m. (CT) in Walter Sillers Coliseum. Then DSU will be at home this Saturday against Montevallo at 4:00 p.m. (CT). 

The Voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross will have the call live on the Statesmen Sports Radio Network and on the FloCollege network for both contests. 

Scouting the Statesmen 

  • Delta State enters this contest with a week rest and are looking to bounce back after a 66-64 loss to the Bucs from Christian Brothers last Thursday in Memphis. Delta State with a 4-8 record in Gulf South Conference Play while holding a 7-10 overall record. 

  • The new year has treated redshirt junior guard Dacory Porter really well. The Jackson native is averaging 19.5 points per game in the month of January and has posted three 20-plus point performances including a 20-point, 10 rebound double-double in DSU's win against Lee two weeks ago. 

  • In the past two weeks, the Statesmen had two solid performances from senior forward Je'Marion Westbrook. The Marianna, Ark., native scored a team-high 21 points last Thursday in Memphis. Against the Bucs, Westbrook shot a season high of 80% from the field. 

Scouting the Warhawks 

  • Auburn Montgomery enters this weekend with a seven-game losing streak, holding a 3-15 overall record and are 1-11 in Gulf South Conference Play. The Warhawks went 0-1 last weekend at home with a loss to Lee 95-61. 

  • With their top scorer in Chapelle Whitney being out since December, junior guard Marius Canery has been the workhorse for the AUM squad. The Lawrence, Mass., native is averaging 12.2 points per game and has 12 blocked shots on the season for the Warhawks. 

  • Last time out, the Warhawks had three guys in double figures in their 95-61 loss to Lee in Montgomery. Senior forward Elhadji Thiam had back-to-back games where he scored double digits as he added 12 points.  

Scouting The Falcons 

  • The preseason GSC favorite Falcons from Montevallo have been on a roll entering this weekend on a three-game winning streak, while holding a 13-6 overall record and are 9-4 in Gulf South Conference Play. 

  • Last week, freshman guard Bryant James earned both Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week and Player of the Week with UM's wins over Trevecca Nazarene and Lee. The Florence, Ala., native averaged 23.0 points per game on a 64.0-percent shooting mark while 57.9 percent from deep and 75.0 percent from the line. 

  • The Falcons are led by Birmingham native Derek Moore. Moore enters this weekend, averaging 19.5 points per game while pulling down 6.9 rebounds per game and has a team-high 12 blocked shots this season.
