CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University men's basketball team battled back in the second half but ultimately fell 76–69 to the University of Montevallo in Gulf South Conference action Saturday afternoon at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
After Montevallo opened the game shooting efficiently from the perimeter to take a 48–34 lead into halftime, the Statesmen responded with a strong second-half effort, outscoring the Falcons 35–28 over the final 20 minutes. Delta State cut the deficit to five points late but was unable to complete the comeback down the stretch.
DaCory Porter led Delta State with 16 points while adding key baskets in the paint during the second-half rally. Bryce Clayton followed with 15 points, including several timely three-pointers that helped close the gap. Jackson Twombly chipped in 15 points of his own, attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line, while Phillip Hughes contributed eight points and eight rebounds.
Delta State shot 40 percent from the field and converted 17-of-21 free throws, while also holding an edge in second-chance points. The Statesmen forced 11 turnovers and capitalized on fast-break opportunities to stay within striking distance throughout the second half.
Montevallo was led by Jaylen Curry and Brandon Fussell, who each scored 20 points. The Falcons connected 12 three-pointers in the contest, including eight in the opening half, to build their early advantage.
With the result, Delta State moves to 8–11 overall and 5–9 in Gulf South Conference play. The Statesmen return to action next week as they continue GSC play against UAH Thursday evening at approximately 7:30 p.m.
