Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University women's basketball team picked up a 57-49 Gulf South Conference victory over Montevallo on Saturday afternoon at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
Delta State led wire-to-wire, building an early advantage and maintaining control throughout the contest. The Lady Statesmen opened the game on a 10-0 run and carried a 28-21 lead into halftime before extending the margin to as many as 11 points in the third quarter.
A balanced scoring effort paced DSU, led by Dakiya Toney with 10 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year. Jariyah Williamson, Bramyia Johnson, Madi Kate Vuncannon, and Kennedee Shelton each added nine points, while Olivia Allen and Jariyah Williamson contributed key minutes off the bench.
Delta State finished with a 37.5% shooting performance from the field and controlled the glass with a 40-33 rebounding advantage. The Lady Statesmen also forced 20 Montevallo turnovers, converting them into 14 points.
The Lady Statesmen outscored Montevallo 28-18 in the paint and tacked on 29 points from its bench. DSU sealed the victory at the free throw line in the final minute.
Delta State will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 5 against UAH. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
