CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State battled through 45 minutes in a high-scoring Gulf South Conference showdown Thursday night but ultimately fell to Valdosta State, 112–103, in overtime at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The Statesmen forced overtime with late-game heroics, highlighted by a career performance from
Elisha Puckett, but the Blazers pulled away in the extra period to secure the conference win.
Delta State (9-14, 6-12 GSC) showcased its offensive depth with four players scoring in double figures, led by Puckett's career-high 26 points. The junior guard shot an efficient 10-for-17 from the field and knocked down four three-pointers, including a clutch go-ahead triple with just over a minute remaining in regulation that gave the Statesmen a 93–91 advantage. Puckett added five rebounds and was instrumental in keeping DSU within striking distance throughout the contest.
Je'Marion Westbrook added 22 points and nine rebounds, providing consistent offense inside and out, while
Bryce Clayton contributed 16 points on a perfect 6-for-7 shooting performance. DaCory Porter chipped in 20 points and connected on 12-of-14 free throws, helping Delta State capitalize at the line and maintain momentum during key stretches.
The game featured 22 lead changes and nine ties, reflecting the evenly matched battle. Delta State trailed by as many as eight points in the first half but responded with timely shooting and defensive stops to remain within two points at halftime, 43–41.
In the second half, the Statesmen surged ahead midway through the period behind a strong offensive push from Puckett and Clayton. Delta State built its largest lead of eight points with just over seven minutes remaining, but Valdosta State answered with key baskets down the stretch to even the score at 94–94 and force overtime.
In the extra period, the Blazers capitalized on second-chance opportunities and free throws to pull away, outscoring Delta State 18–9 in overtime to secure the victory. Valdosta State finished with 58 points in the paint and held a rebounding advantage that proved critical in the final minutes.
Despite the loss, Delta State shot over 42 percent from the field and connected on 16 three-pointers, showcasing its offensive potential against one of the conference's top teams.
The Statesmen will look to bounce back as they continue Gulf South Conference play in their next outing Saturday afternoon against the Argonauts from the University of West Florida at approximately 4:00 p.m. (CT).
