Lady Statesmen fall in rubber match to UWF 9-0

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University softball team dropped a 9–0 decision in five innings to No. 7 West Florida on Saturday afternoon at University Field.

The Lady Statesmen (4–13, 2–4 GSC) collected three hits but were held off the board by UWF ace Haley Guffey, who moved to 11–0 after allowing just three baserunners across 4.2 innings.

West Florida opened the scoring in the second, turning a single and an infield error into a 1–0 lead. The Argonauts broke the game open an inning later when Hannah Harper walked, Nicole Mergen singled, and Baughan drove a three-run homer to right to make it 4–0. UWF added another run in the frame and carried a 4–0 advantage into the fourth.

The Argonauts continued to apply pressure in the fourth, beginning with a Harper double before adding four runs on three hits, including an RBI single from Nevaeh Hayes and a two-run pinch-hit single from A. Pippen. Baughan added her second home run of the day in the fifth, a solo shot to center.

Delta State produced its best scoring chances in the fourth and fifth innings. Mary Teague singled to start the fourth, and in the fifth, Carly Dunigan doubled down the left-field line before Hallie Turner added a pinch-hit single to put runners on the corners. The Lady Statesmen finished with three hits—Teague, Dunigan, and Turner each recording one—and stranded four runners.

Grace Pippin (1–3) worked the first three innings for DSU, allowing five runs on eight hits. Ellie Cox and Maeve Lavoy combined for the final two frames, with Lavoy surrendering just one run in her inning of work.

Delta State returns to action this Wednesday as they take on the Reddies from Henderson State University in a doubleheader at University Field starting at 2:00 p.m. (CT).
