Lady Statesmen Split doubleheader with No. 7 West Florida

CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University softball team split its Friday doubleheader with No. 7 West Florida at University Field, falling 7–4 in the opener before responding with a composed, complete performance in a 3–1 victory in Game Two.

Game One: No. 7 West Florida 7, Delta State 4
West Florida used early pressure and six Delta State errors to build a lead it never surrendered. The Argonauts plated two unearned runs in the first, added another in the third, and broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning.

Delta State continued to generate offense throughout the game. Kyleigh Wheaton delivered a two-run home run in the fifth, her sixth of the season, pulling DSU within striking distance. Carly Dunigan posted a two-hit outing with a run scored, while Maeve Lavoy added an RBI double in the fourth.

Despite the late push, UWF's Hannah Guffey went the distance, allowing six hits and striking out four.

Game Two: Delta State 3, No. 7 West Florida 1

Delta State answered with its most complete performance of the season, backed by a dominant outing from Lavoy, who tossed a four-hit complete game with four strikeouts and just one walk.

The Statesmen struck first in the third when Joryie McKnight doubled down the left-field line, scoring Mary Teague after she reached on a hit-by-pitch. West Florida tied the game in the fifth, but DSU immediately reclaimed control.

In the sixth, Teague singled, McKnight reached on an error, and Wheaton ripped an RBI double to put Delta State back in front. Dunigan followed with a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 3–1. Lavoy retired the final three hitters she faced to secure the win.

Doubleheader Highlights
  • Wheaton finished the day with three RBI, including a home run and the go-ahead double in Game Two.
  • McKnight totaled three hits, two runs, and an RBI across both games.
  • Lavoy improved to 2–0, allowing just one run in her complete-game effort.
  • Teague reached base four times and scored three runs on the day.

Delta State moves to 4–12 on the season and 2-3 in conference play and hands West Florida just its third loss of the year and their first in conference play. The Statesmen continue their homestand as conference play resumes this weekend with the rubber match tomorrow to complete the three-game series at noon.
