VALDOSTA, Ga. — The Delta State University softball teamd opened its Saturday road twinbill with early leads in both contests, but Valdosta State used late-inning surges in each game to sweep the doubleheader, 8–3 and 3–2, at Steel's Diamond.
Game 1: Valdosta State 8, Delta State 3
Delta State (8–15) struck first with a two-run homer from
Kyleigh Wheaton in the top of the first, and
Hallie Turner added an RBI triple in the fourth to push the Lady Statesmen ahead 3–0. But four Delta State errors opened the door for Valdosta State (11–11), which capitalized with a four-run fourth and a four-run sixth to take control.
Turner finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while
Mary Teague and
Carly Dunigan each added two hits. Wheaton's first-inning blast accounted for two RBI.
Maeve Lavoy (4–2) worked all six innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts.
Valdosta State's
Cailyn Cooke drove in four runs, including a two-RBI single in the fourth that put the Blazers ahead for good.
Giselle Portanova earned the win with five innings of work, and
Savannah Barfield collected the save.
Game 2: Valdosta State 3, Delta State 2
Delta State again jumped ahead early, taking a 1–0 lead in the second on an RBI single from
Ally Agner, then extending the margin to 2–0 in the fourth when
Maeve Lavoy launched her first home run of the season.
Starter
Kendal Moore held the Blazers scoreless through five, but Valdosta State rallied late. A solo homer from
Saylor McNearney in the sixth cut the deficit to one, and a two-run walk-off homer from
Rachel Lee in the seventh completed the comeback.
Lavoy led DSU with a 2-for-3 performance, while
Hallie Turner added a seventh-inning single. Moore (2–5) scattered five hits over 6.1 innings and struck out three.
Valdosta State used a two-pitcher combination, with
Toree Wofford earning the win after four innings of two-hit relief.
The two teams wrap up their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. (CT)/1:00 p.m. (ET).
