VALDOSTA, Ga. — The Delta State University softball team dropped the series finale to Valdosta State, 12-1, in five innings on Sunday afternoon in Gulf South Conference action.
Valdosta State (13-11, 8-4 GSC) used a big offensive day, collecting 11 hits and four home runs to secure the run-rule victory. Delta State (8-17, 4-8 GSC) managed four hits in the contest, highlighted by a solo home run from
Carly Dunigan.
The Lady Blazers struck first in the second inning, plating three runs on a pair of doubles and a wild pitch to take an early 3-0 lead. Valdosta State added three more in the third inning on back-to-back home runs from Madison VanAllen and Rachel Lee to extend the advantage to 6-0.
Delta State answered in the top of the fourth inning when Dunigan blasted a solo home run to left center, trimming the deficit to 6-1.
However, Valdosta State responded with a six-run bottom half of the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. The inning featured two more home runs, along with a pair of RBI hits that pushed the score to 12-1.
Dunigan led the Statesmen offensively with a 1-for-2 performance and the lone RBI of the game.

Calli McConnell each added hits for Delta State.
Maeve Lavoy (4-3) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits over 2.2 innings while striking out three.
Averi Bridgman and
Kendal Moore each saw time in relief.
Madison VanAllen (4-1) earned the win for Valdosta State, tossing five innings while allowing one run on four hits and striking out four.
Delta State will look to bounce back as the Lady Statesmen will host the Magicians from LeMoyne-Owen Wednesday afternoon at University Field.
