Lady Statesmen drop series finale to UWA

CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University softball team dropped the series finale to West Alabama on Sunday afternoon at University Field, falling 12–0 in six innings as the visiting Tigers used a pair of early home runs and a five-run sixth to pull away. The Lady Statesmen move to 11–19 overall and 5–10 in Gulf South Conference play.

West Alabama struck first in the second inning behind back-to-back swings from ShaKeria Washington and Kayla Morris. Washington opened the scoring with a solo homer to center, and Morris followed later in the frame with a two-run shot to right center to make it 3–0. The Tigers added single runs in the fourth and fifth before breaking the game open with a six-hit, five-run sixth.

Delta State generated base runners in four of six innings but could not push a run across against UWA starter Eleanor De Block, who scattered three hits and struck out three in a complete-game effort. DSU's best early chance came in the first, when Mary Teague walked and advanced to third on Carly Dunigan's single, but a pair of infield outs ended the threat.

Maeve Lavoy recorded one of Delta State's three hits, with a leadoff single in the sixth, while Dunigan and Hallie Turner each added one hit. Lavoy worked 5.1 innings in the circle, striking out five before giving way to Kendal Moore for the final two outs.

West Alabama finished with 12 hits, highlighted by Washington's three RBI and a three-run triple from Haley Shannon in the sixth. Morris also drove in three and scored twice.

Delta State returns to action next weekend with a GSC road series at UAH with a double header on Friday followed by a single game on Saturday.
