HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Delta State University softball team dropped both games of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Friday at Les Stuedeman, falling 14-6 and 13-4 to UAH.
In game one, the Statesmen (11-21, 11-20 GSC) jumped out to a fast start, plating three runs in the opening inning behind RBI hits from
Kyleigh Wheaton and
Ally Agner.
UAH answered immediately and took control with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Brittany Slaten. The Chargers continued to build their lead with runs in the fourth, fifth, and a four-run sixth to secure the 14-6 win.
Delta State tallied 11 hits in the opener, with
Carly Dunigan and Wheaton each recording two hits. Agner added a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Dunigan drove in a run and scored twice.
In game two, Alabama Huntsville struck early once again, scoring four runs in the first and adding six more in the second to put Delta State in an early deficit.
The Statesmen showed resilience, scoring in the second on an RBI double from
Maya Mills and adding three runs in the fourth inning.
Kyleigh Wheaton delivered an RBI double, while
Maeve Lavoy and Mills each drove in runs during the frame.
Despite the offensive push, UAH's bats remained hot, finishing with 15 hits in the 13-4 victory.
Mills led Delta State in game two with a double, RBI, and a run scored, while Wheaton and
Calli McConnell also recorded doubles. The Statesmen drew seven walks but were unable to overcome the early deficit.
Delta State will look to bounce back as the series concludes against the Chargers tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
