MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Delta State University women's tennis team delivered a dominant performance on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Christian Brothers, 6-1, at the Leftwich Tennis Center.
With the win, the Lady Statesmen improve to 9-6 overall on the season and are 1-5 in conference play.
Delta State set the tone early by sweeping doubles play to claim the opening point. The duo of
Amelia Ciesielczyk and
Yasmina Mayer earned a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Anastasi Iakovlieva and
Trinity Ly secured a 6-2 win at No. 2.
Lena Kuehn and
Angie Moreno added the third doubles point via forfeit to complete the sweep.
In singles action, DSU continued its strong play, winning five of six matches.
Trinity Ly cruised to a straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Anastasi Iakovlieva followed with a convincing 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position.
Yasmina Mayer picked up a win at No. 3 after her opponent retired.
Delta State also received points at No. 5 and No. 6 singles from
Lena Kuehn and
Angie Moreno, respectively, both by forfeit.
Christian Brothers' lone point came at No. 1 singles, where Valerie Neumann outlasted
Amelia Ciesielczyk in a hard-fought match, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
The Lady Statesmen will look to carry the momentum into later this week when they host Harding University Friday at the Cleveland Country Club at noon.
