HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Delta State University softball team used a five-run surge across the fifth and sixth innings to defeat UAH 5-3 in Gulf South Conference action Saturday at Les Stuedeman Field.
After four scoreless innings, the Statesmen (12-21, 6-12 GSC) broke through in the fifth when
Carly Dunigan hit a two-run home run to right center, scoring
Maeve Lavoy for a 2-0 lead.
Delta State added three more runs in the sixth.
Maya Mills scored on a bases-loaded walk by Lavoy, and Dunigan delivered again with a two-out, two-run single to push the advantage to 5-0.
UAH (23-14, 9-9 GSC) rallied in the seventh inning. Alexa Douthitt drove in two runs with a single to left field, and McKamey Bratcher followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-3, but the Chargers left the tying run on base.
Dunigan finished 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead Delta State. Mills and
Hallie Turner each recorded two hits.
Lavoy (6-5) earned the win with a complete-game effort, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and five walks.
Delta State totaled eight hits, while Alabama Huntsville had five.
The Lady Statesmen return to University Field this upcoming Tuesday as they will take on the Golden Suns from Arkansas Tech University at 2:00 p.m. (CT).
