RIDGELAND, Miss. — The No. 47 Delta State University men's tennis team fell 4-0 to Lynn University on Friday at the Ridgeland Tennis Center.
Lynn (6-3) secured the early advantage by claiming the doubles point. The Fighting Knights took victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to go ahead 1-0 before the third match could be completed. Louay Makke and Davide Cortimiglia defeated
Marti Cerda Castillo and
Valentino Millimaci 6-1 on court one, while Aymen Alimoussa and Santino Morel earned a 6-3 win over
Valentin Greco and
Simon Ojeda on court two. The No. 3 doubles contest between Victor Alves and Lennart Ostheimer and Delta State's
Juan Diego Alzate and
Alejandro Bravo was left unfinished with Lynn leading 4-3.
In singles play, Lynn clinched the match with three straight-set victories. Makke earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ojeda at No. 1 singles. On court three, Alves defeated Cerda Castillo 6-4, 6-3, and Ostheimer secured the match point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Greco at No. 4 singles.
Several other matches were still in progress when the contest was decided. At No. 2 singles, Lynn's Alimoussa held a 7-6, 3-2 lead over Alzate, while Morel led Bravo 6-3, 4-5 at No. 5 singles. Cortimiglia also led
Joaquin Jarochevsky 7-6, 2-1 in the No. 6 singles match before play was halted.
With the loss, Delta State moves to 5-4 on the season while Lynn improves to 6-3.
The Statesmen will head to Pensacola for two matches during spring break starting with a neutral GSC match against the Blazers from Valdosta State on Sunday.
