NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Delta State University baseball team opened its three-game Gulf South Conference series in dominant fashion Friday evening, rolling to a 15-0 victory over Trevecca Nazarene in seven innings at Jackson Field.
The Statesmen (22-15, 15-10 GSC) wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on
Tucker Jones' two-run home run to left field. Delta State added to its lead in the third when
Levi Lang launched a solo shot, extending the advantage to 3-0.
After pushing across another run in the fourth, the Statesmen broke the game wide open in the sixth inning. Delta State plated eight runs on five hits, capitalizing on multiple Trevecca Nazarene errors to stretch the lead to 12-0. Lang highlighted the inning with a two-RBI double, while
Drew Prosek added a two-run single.
Delta State wasn't finished, as
Bo Rock delivered a three-run homer in the seventh inning to cap the scoring and secure the run-rule victory.
At the plate, the Statesmen tallied 15 runs on 15 hits, with Jones, Lang and
Cooper Walls each recording multi-hit performances. Lang drove in three runs, while Jones and Rock also finished with three RBIs apiece.
On the mound,
Adrian Byrd was outstanding, tossing a complete-game shutout in the seven-inning contest. The left-hander allowed just five hits while striking out seven and walking none to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Trevecca Nazarene was held scoreless despite collecting five hits, as Delta State's defense turned two double plays and kept the Trojans off the scoreboard throughout.
The two teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday.
