NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Delta State University Baseball team closed out its weekend on the road by taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Trevecca Nazarene University, locking up a 2–1 series victory and strengthening its position in the GSC standings.
GAME 1 — Delta State 5, Trevecca Nazarene 4
Delta State set the tone early in the afternoon with a composed, opportunistic performance in the opener. After falling behind 1–0 in the first, the Statesmen answered in the second when
Cade Greer ripped a triple into right and came home on an RBI groundout from
Austin Batts. The momentum carried into the fourth, where Batts again delivered, this time driving a double into left to score
Drew Prosek and give DSU a 2–1 lead.
Trevecca briefly surged ahead in the fifth, but Delta State responded immediately.
Levi Lang opened the sixth with a double, and after a walk to Batts,
Cooper Walls stepped in and delivered the biggest swing of the game — a two-run double into the left-center gap that pushed the Statesmen back in front. Lang added an RBI groundout in the seventh to extend the lead, and the bullpen handled the rest.
Blake King worked 4.1 innings before turning the ball over to
Ryan Herbison, who steadied the game with 2.2 innings of one-run relief.
Dawson Muenzenmay closed it out with a composed two-inning save, sealing a 5–4 win to open the day.
GAME 2 — Trevecca Nazarene 5, Delta State 3
The second game carried a different rhythm but the same competitive edge. Trevecca struck first with a pair of runs in the opening inning, but Delta State answered in the fourth when
Levi Lang singled and
Stone Collier followed by launching his first home run of the season with a two-run blast to left, tying the game at 2–2. The Statesmen kept the pressure on in the fifth as
Austin Estes doubled and later scored on an infield single from
Tucker Jones, giving DSU its first lead of the game.
Trevecca, however, found its spark in the sixth. A bunt RBI tied the game before a two-run homer from Isaac Whitaker swung the momentum back to the Trojans. Delta State threatened in the seventh but couldn't break through, and Trevecca held on for the 5–3 win.
Mason Shropshire gave the Statesmen five innings with three strikeouts, and
Aidan McCrady handled the final frame.
The Statesmen (23-16, 16-11 GSC) will continue its road stretch in April with a road trip to Montgomery next weekend to take on the Warhawks from Auburn Montgomery next weekend.
