MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Behind a dominant outing from
Adrian Byrd and an explosive offensive performance, Delta State rolled to an 11-0 shutout victory over Auburn University at Montgomery on Friday evening at the AUM Baseball Complex.
Byrd (6-1) was in complete control on the mound, tossing a seven-inning complete game while allowing just four hits and striking out 11 to lead the Statesmen. He worked around two walks and kept the Warhawks off the scoreboard all night.
Delta State (24-16, 17-11 GSC) broke through in the third inning and never looked back.
Tucker Jones got the scoring started with a two-run home run to left field, and
Henley Parker later drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0.
The Statesmen added to their lead in the fourth on an RBI single from
Walker Maranto before erupting for three runs in the sixth.
Landon Holliman and Jones each drove in runs in the frame, while
Cade Greer added an RBI double to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Delta State put the game out of reach in the seventh, plating four runs highlighted by a three-run double from Maranto.
At the plate, the Statesmen tallied 13 hits, led by Jones, who finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Maranto also drove in four runs, going 2-for-5, while Holliman scored three times and added two hits. Greer chipped in with two hits and an RBI in the win.
AUM (11-32, 6-22 GSC) managed just four hits and struck out 11 times against Byrd, unable to generate any sustained offense.
Delta State will look to carry the momentum into the remainder of the series against the Warhawks as the series concludes with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
