CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University women's tennis team dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to No. 4 West Alabama on Monday at Cleveland Country Club.
The Tigers (18-4, 7-2 GSC) secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Lady Statesmen (11-8).
West Alabama extended its advantage in singles play with straight-set victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the match.
Delta State battled back with three points of its own.
Anastasiia Iakovlieva earned a three-set victory at No. 4 singles, rallying for a 7-6, 1-6, 1(10)-0(8) win over the 69
th ranked Jenaila Prulla.
Lena Kuehn followed with a strong performance at No. 5, winning 6-2, 6-3, 1 (11)-0(9) over 49
th ranked Nanoka Kazama.
Angie Moreno added the final point for the Statesmen via forfeit at No. 6.
Despite the late push, the early deficit proved too much to overcome as Delta State fell just short in the 4-3 final.
The Lady Statesmen will be in the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament starting Thursday April 23
