MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Delta State University softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Auburn Montgomery on Friday afternoon in Gulf South Conference softball action at the AUM Softball Complex.
The Lady Statesmen (12-32, 6-21 GSC) were limited to four hits in the opener of the series, while Auburn Montgomery (37-7, 20-7 GSC) used timely hitting and a three-hit day from Chloe Baynes to secure the win.
AUM struck first in the opening inning when Olivia Watkins delivered an RBI double to left field, scoring Baynes for a 1-0 lead. The Warhawks added another run in the third after Rebecca Komers tripled to right center to plate Baynes and make it 2-0.
Delta State broke through in the fifth inning after
Laney Daigrepont reached on an error and
Shelby Allen entered as a pinch runner.
Mary Teague moved Allen into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before
Maeve Lavoy drove a double to right center, bringing Allen home and cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Warhawks answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning as Gabbi Barnowsky lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Baynes to score her third run of the day and push the lead back to 3-1.
Calli McConnell led the Lady Statesmen offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Lavoy added Delta State's lone RBI and also tossed all six innings in the circle, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out one.
Hallie Turner added a hit and a walk, while Lavoy accounted for the fourth hit with her RBI double.
AUM pitcher Sydni Free earned the complete-game victory, allowing just one unearned run on four hits with two strikeouts across seven innings.
Delta State will return home for senior day, next weekend at University Field against Mississippi College. The First game of the three-game series will be at Friday at 3:00 p.m. (CT).
