Lady Statesmen Drop Double Header to Choctaws

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Softball team dropped both games of a double header Saturday afternoon against the Choctaws from Mississippi College at University Field.

The Choctaws took game one 14-2 in six innings followed by a 2-1 win in eight innings.

GAME 1 — Mississippi College 14, Delta State 2 (6 inn.)
Delta State struck early but could not withstand a relentless Mississippi College offense, as the Choctaws used a pair of multi-run frames and a seven-run sixth to take the opener 14–2 in six innings.

Mary Teague opened the scoring for DSU, singling down the left-field line and later coming home on Maeve Lavoy's RBI single to shortstop. Lavoy drove in both Lady Statesmen runs in the game, adding a sacrifice fly in the third after Joryie McKnight tripled to left.

Mississippi College answered with pressure throughout the lineup, capitalizing on two DSU defensive miscues in the third and adding a solo home run from Ellie Fryar in the fourth. The Choctaws broke the game open in the sixth, producing seven runs on five hits, highlighted by a three-run double from Mary Lem and a two-run single from Madelyn Halle.

Joryie McKnight finished 2-for-3 with a triple, while Laney Daigrepont and Carly Dunigan each added hits.

Key DSU Line:
McKnight — 2-for-3, 3B, R
Lavoy — 1-for-1, 2 RBI

GAME 2 — Mississippi College 2, Delta State 1 (8 inn.)
Game two delivered a far different tone: a tight, low-scoring pitchers' duel that stretched into extra innings before Mississippi College edged DSU 2–1.

Delta State grabbed the lead in the fourth when Joryie McKnight dropped a bunt single, stole second, and scored on Kyleigh Wheaton's RBI single up the middle. Kendal Moore kept the Choctaws quiet through five innings, scattering just three hits.

Mississippi College equalized in the sixth on an RBI single from Megan Matheis, then broke the tie in the eighth when Matheis homered to right-center. DSU brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom half, but a pair of strikeouts ended the rally.

Moore worked 7.1 strong innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out two. McKnight, Dunigan, Wheaton, Lavoy, and Turner each recorded hits for the Lady Statesmen.

Key DSU Line:
Moore — 7.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Wheaton — 1-for-4, RBI
