Lady Statesmen Drop Weekend opening Doubleheader to No. 6 AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Delta State University Softball team dropped both ends of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader to No. 6 Auburn Montgomery on Friday at the AUM Softball Complex, falling 4-0 in game one and 7-1 in game two.

Game One – AUM 4, Delta State 0
The Lady Statesmen were limited to three hits in the opener as AUM's Reese Cauley controlled the game in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts.

Delta State threatened early when Mary Teague led off with a double in the first inning, but the opportunity slipped away. From there, the Statesmen managed just two more hits the rest of the contest.

AUM struck quickly in the bottom of the first, using a two-RBI double from Cauley to take a 2-0 lead. The Warhawks added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend the margin to 4-0.

Maeve Lavoy went the distance for Delta State, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out three.

Game Two – AUM 7, Delta State 1
In the nightcap, Auburn Montgomery used patience at the plate and a big fifth inning to secure the sweep.

The Warhawks plated two runs in the first inning and added another in the third before breaking the game open with a four-run fifth. AUM drew nine walks in the contest, putting consistent pressure on the Statesmen pitching staff.

Delta State scored its lone run in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a Warhawk error to cut the deficit to 3-1 at the time. However, AUM responded immediately with its four-run frame to put the game out of reach.

The Statesmen were held to just two hits in game two, with Maeve Lavoy and Rebecca Martinez accounting for both.

Kendal Moore took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs over four innings, while Grace Pippin worked two innings in relief.
