CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University softball dropped its series finale to Mississippi College, 11-5, on Sunday afternoon at University Field.
Mississippi College used a power surge early to take control, belting five home runs and building an 8-3 lead through four innings. The Choctaws plated multiple runs in four different frames and never trailed after a two-run homer in the second inning.
Delta State (12-32, 6-23 GSC) answered in spots throughout the game, highlighted by solo home runs from
Maeve Lavoy and a two-run blast from
Laney Daigrepont in the third inning to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Lady Statesmen added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings but could not string together enough offense to close the gap.
Lavoy led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Daigrepont finished 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, while
Ally Agner added a hit and an RBI.
Joryie McKnight and
Carly Dunigan also contributed hits in the effort.
In the circle, Lavoy took the loss after allowing six runs in 2.2 innings.
Kendal Moore,
Ellie Cox, and
Grace Pippin combined in relief to finish the game.
Mississippi College was paced by Ellie Fryar, who went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three runs scored, while Blakely Gill and Mary Lem each drove in multiple runs.
Delta State totaled eight hits in the contest and committed no errors defensively.
The Lady Statesmen will look to regroup as they continue conference play next week with the final three-game series of the regular series at Lee University.
