Lady Statesmen Split Doubleheader Against Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Delta State University Softball team split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at Lee on Friday, taking game one before falling in the nightcap at Butler Field in Cleveland, Tennessee.

The Lady Statesmen (13-36, 7-25 GSC) opened the day with a 4-3 victory behind a complete game from Maeve Lavoy, but were held scoreless in an 8-0 loss in five innings in game two.

Game One: Delta State 4, Lee 3
Delta State struck early and never relinquished control, plating a run in the first inning. Joryie McKnight led off with a bunt single, stole second, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Carly Dunigan to give DSU a 1-0 advantage.

Lee responded with two unearned runs in the third and added a solo home run from Addi Lewis in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Statesmen answered in the fifth, capitalizing on defensive miscues. Laney Daigrepont and Maya Mills each recorded singles before Lavoy reached on an error that allowed a run to score.
Mills later crossed the plate to tie the game at 3-3.

Delta State regained the lead in the sixth when Mary Teague singled and eventually scored on an RBI single from Daigrepont, making it 4-3.

Lavoy (7-13) handled the rest in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just four hits and one earned run, striking out three to secure the win.

Daigrepont led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Mills and Teague each added a hit in the victory.

Game Two: Lee 8, Delta State 0 (5 inn.)
Lee used timely hitting and a pair of big swings from Madison Pinzon to secure the split in game two.

After two scoreless innings, Pinzon launched a two-run home run in the second inning to give Lee an early lead.

The Flames added two more runs in the fourth, aided by a Delta State error, before breaking the game open in the fifth. Pinzon struck again with a three-run homer, finishing with five RBIs on the day, as Lee pushed the lead to 8-0.

Delta State managed four hits in the contest, with Maya Mills recording a pair of hits to lead the offense.

Kendal Moore took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) over four innings of work, while Ellie Cox surrendered four runs in relief.

Lee pitcher Kaylee Underwood kept the Lady Statesmen off the scoreboard, tossing a complete-game shutout and allowing just four hits.

Delta State will look to get a series win tomorrow against the Flames with the rubber match starting at 1:00 p.m. (CT)/2:00 p.m. (ET).
